Invasion Day 2020

Truth. Treaty. Justice.

What is Invasion Day?

On January 26, 1788 the First Fleet arrived at Port Jackson, and Arthur Phillip raised the Union Jack on the land of the Eora nation. This was an invasion that had catastrophic and tragic consequences for all the peoples and nations who had lived here for tens of thousands of years, and for their descendants.

What followed was brutal frontier violence, massacres, the forced removal of children from their families, indentured and slave labour and violent attempts to wipe out First Nations language and culture.

This is not a day to celebrate. By continuing to celebrate Australia on January 26 we deny the truth about our shared history.

As Australians, we all want a day on which we can come together as a community. January 26 is not that day.

It’s time to acknowledge the truth about our shared history, listen to First Nations people when they tell this truth and be part of addressing the contemporary consequences of invasion and the inter-generational trauma, the resulting dispossession and marginalisation that is part of our unfinished business.

    Find an event

First Nations peoples have been protesting and boycotting the many different forms Australia Day has taken for over a century.

By refusing to participate in a day that marks dispossession and violence we acknowledge the truth about our shared history and create a movement for change. That’s why the Greens are urging all Australians to attend Invasion Day protests in their region.
